jellyfish

in your standard aquarium
beyond the turquoise
shark-tank or the
slow ooze of eels, or
the touch tank of
sticky, finger-clinging
starfish,
we amble hand in hand
around an incandescent corner
to find at once, our
paper-doll silhouettes before
a tank of jellyfish.

we find
after a while
our   breath coincides
with these
bulbous unruly bodies
that move like
big slow   yawns
open          close
open          close

they are leisurely see-through
lingerie bodies of strings
with delicate thread
through their centers

they are
aliens, large and sideways
giant eyes with great white lashes!
great wide irises!

we look on, great and
long-lashed too,
silently complete
as if asleep, fingers
tip to tip

love is like this
curiously,  as our jellyfish.        wide,
                            quiet as dying
