Since ancient times the tradition in India has given women the highest respect, along with recognition equal to men in the realm of gods and goddesses. Saraswati is the goddess of knowledge and the arts.  The name Saraswati literally means: "one who gives the essence (sara) of our own self (swa)".  She is the consort of Brahma, who is the creator.  Knowledge, creativity and the arts are symbolically unified in the marriage of Brahma and Saraswati.

Saraswati is not interested in worldly possessions ... she rules the intellectual and creative realms of the universe.  The goddess is portrayed sitting on a lotus holding sacred scripture in one hand and a lotus in the
other ... her third and fourth hands play an Indian lute. According to the Balinese Hindu calendar July 14th is Hari Raya Saraswati - all schools and libraries, teachers/students/artists will hold special ceremonies to honor Saraswati.  Perhaps you might want to give thanks today for the creativity and knowledge in your life.
