After years of skipping the astrology section of the local paper and resisting all urges to call a psychic hotline, I think I'm finally ready to admit there may be some merit to the notion that things go well when the planets are in alignment. After completing four major moves in two years, I was determined to settle down. Despite my commitment to begin my "real life," I had no idea where to start. I'd finished college, worked at jobs that had never been fulfilling and I couldn't seem to find work that I was really passionate about. Out of frustration, I posted a lengthy plea for inspiration on an Internet message board. And though I
felt silly asking strangers for input on my career
direction, the events that followed have changed my
life. I immediately received a response from a woman who lives two blocks from my new home. She was facing many of the same challenges I was. We met and became instant friends. When a well-known author posted a message looking for stories for her upcoming book, I responded. To my astonishment, she contacted me with the wonderful news that my story would be published. This success prompted me to continue writing, sharing my work and attempting to get published - and I've been very successful. After recently receiving an assignment to write a freelance article, I turned to the message board for help finding appropriate sources. When I decided to pursue an internship with a local newspaper or magazine, my search had barely begun when I received a random e-mail from a message board regular who works for a local paper. I continue to visit the message board and as a result I've established new connections in my community. On a recent trip to a coffee shop with a message board friend, I was introduced to a Canadian woman living in the US with her husband, and we talked at length about the challenges we've faced in our attempt to immigrate. Call it karma or fate or planetary alignment. However you label it, I have found a community of passionate, succulent souls from around the globe that have become my friends. In their words I have found inspiration and support, and the belief that all is right with the universe. |
