I am nine years old
Tangled dishwater locks, bony knees
Cinnamon skin pocked with mosquito bites
Running at the edge of the beach
Racing my brothers in a flat out sprint
Sharp hot sand biting my feet
Leaping castles, weaving past stray kids and sunbathers
Musical laughter erupts
Loud and cunning

Revved up, full throttle into the water
Diving headlong, the water mid thigh
Hit the waves legs kicking arms flailing
Strong smooth artfully careless strokes
Swamping wayward bystanders
Too bad for them

Fast as lighting for the raft
Spitting brown fishy water
Wonder Bread bag
Blue white red
Held high over my head
