It is dangerous to believe everything I hear, everything I read, everything I’m told.  So much of what others say is subjective, the truth colored with another’s opinions and beliefs, that once I understand their truth, I realize I don’t agree at all.  I was once told by a coworker that I couldn’t be a network engineer, and had I believed him I would have denied myself the most fun, challenging, and rewarding 8-year career experience.  His notion was based on beliefs that it was a man’s job, and women don’t do that sort of thing.  Did I agree?  Not in the slightest.

On the other hand though, it’s also dangerous to never listen to anyone, and believe that my way is the only way, refusing to listen to contrary opinions.  I end up in more arguments with my mate by taking the stubborn stance that I’m right and he’s wrong, refusing to hear what he has to say.  When I start to ask questions, and listen to him, the arguments usually dissolve.

Danger, then, lives on both sides of the fence, and it’s up to me to listen, but to ask enough questions to see if someone else’s version of the truth applies to me.

We broadened this issue of Be Real Magazine to go beyond the topic of danger, although you’ll likely find traces of it throughout the stories and poems you’ll find in this issue.  We have found the topics for each issue too constraining, and have done away with them altogether!  If you happen to be a writer as well as a reader, what this means is that we welcome your nonfiction writing and poetry on all topics, at all times, and we’ll find the common thread that bring an issue of Be Real Magazine together.

As always, readers, thank you for reading, writers, thank you for writing, and artists, thanks for creating.  You are the backbone of this magazine.

all the best,

Julie Russell
