Letters to My Younger Self

Dear Younger Self:

Do more things!  Don't worry about what's the RIGHT thing to do!  Do something.  Doing is much more fun than thinking.  Don't dwell on what you've done or not done already.  Do more.  Say more, risk more, dare more.  And get your bangs cut twice as often.

Dear Younger Self:

You cannot control anybody's emotions.  Please don't waste your time attempting to do so.  Just say what is on your mind right away.  Say it now and unburden yourself.  As you speak you will release your fears.
Dear Younger Self:

You are dearly loved every moment.

Dear Younger Self:

Your parents are flawed.  They are not perfect.  Forgive them and forgive yourself.

Dear YS:

Keep your eyes open.  All the answers are right in front of you.  It's all here for a reason.  You are on the right track (even when it doesn't feel right).

Love, OS

Dearest Younger Self:

You are wonderful--yes even with all of your flaws.  Don't try to change, try to BE.

Dear Little One,

I wish I could say it's all roses ahead of you.  In a way it is all roses - but you get hurt by a few thorns here and there.  I want to tell you "don't worry" but I know you're good at it so I won't bother.
I know you love the comforts of your bedroom and would stay there all day if given your choice.  Your Grandma and others think there are things wrong with this and that you should be outside with other kids.  Please know there is nothing wrong with you for wanting to be alone.  It's not a trait many people master as they spend their lives hiding and running from solitude.  It's safe in your room and that serves you well.
I would like to ask you to do something though.  Everyday I'd like you to do something that scares you.  A little thing is fine, but it would be great if you would do the biggest thing you fear that day.  It could be anything - like riding your bike UP curbs or showing something to your Mom and fearing rejection.  These all count.  You are so much braver than you think or feel.  If I could show you the future you'd see that at 31 you've just returned from an unplanned trip to three countries in Europe - ALONE!  I can see now that safety is an illusion - and you are no more safe in your room than you are on a train speeding along the Mediterranean between Italy and France.
You have it in you to do amazing things.  Please try!
